Five Million Dollars for 100 People Who Asked for an Exemption

The EEOC announced a $5 million agreement with Battelle Energy Alliance, the contractor that runs Idaho National Laboratory, resolving religious and disability accommodation charges from more than 100 employees under its COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
On 20 July 2026 the EEOC announced that Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC — the DOE contractor that manages Idaho National Laboratory — agreed to pay $5 million in back pay and compensatory damages to a class of more than 100 employees over denied religious and disability accommodations under its COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
The resolution came through pre-litigation conciliation of a 2021 commissioner’s charge filed by Chair Andrea Lucas, plus fifteen individual charges out of BEA’s Idaho Falls facilities. The Commission found reasonable cause as to unlawful medical inquiries, accommodation denials, and terminations under Title VII and the ADA. The three-year agreement also requires HR training on religious and disability accommodation. BEA settled without admitting a violation, which is how these always end.
Chair Lucas: "There was no pandemic exception to workers’ civil rights and liberties. Absent undue hardship, employers are required to provide reasonable accommodation for sincerely held religious beliefs and qualifying disabilities."
One honest caveat, because precision is the credibility: INL is a national laboratory, but BEA personnel are contractor employees, not federal civil servants. This is not a federal-sector decision.
It is still the largest exemption recovery of the summer, and it says out loud what agencies spent four years pretending was an open question.
